Anna Mason, 23, Dartmouth NS
Anna Mason was assaulted on the evening of December 17, 1992 and died during the night of December 18, 1992 while in hospital. She was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend.
Anna was remembered as a kind person and a loving mother to her three children, two sons and a daughter. To provide for her children, Anna worked the streets for a period, but quit after getting social assistance.
Around 8 p.m. on December 17th, Anna’s ex-boyfriend came to her apartment where a group of people had gathered. He demanded that she come out into the hallway.
Anna’s niece, who was inside the apartment, heard a loud noise and went out in the hallway to find her Aunt lying semi-conscious on the floor with blood running from her mouth and nose.
Several men who had arrived with Anna’s ex-boyfriend took her to the hospital, where she died within a few hours, from a blow to her left cheek, which tore a major artery to the brain.
Anna’s ex-boyfriend was originally charged with second-degree murder but went on to plead guilty to manslaughter. He was given a sentence of six years in prison.
