Berneice Mills, 58, Halfway River NS
On October 15, 1997, at the age of 58, Berneice Mills was murdered by her husband, who then turned the gun on himself.
Berneice was the loving mother to six adult children.
Before relocating from Oshawa to Nova Scotia, Berneice had been employed for many years at The Oshawa Times.
According to RCMP there had been no evidence of abuse or previous family violence or disturbances. It was noted, ‘They seemed to be a perfectly good couple.’
People had noticed a change in Berneice’s husband’s behavior in the two weeks prior to their deaths. They indicated that he seemed to become very possessive, but they did not think that the behavioral changes were significant enough to think that this was going to happen.
After not hearing from Berniece and her husband in two days, a relative went to the family home. When relatives did not detect any signs of activity, the RCMP were called.
