Emma Ann Paul, 25, Membertou NS

Emma Ann was a daughter, sister and mother of three children who was tragically taken from her family and friends on September 25, 1991 at the age of 25.

Emma’s body was found in the bathroom by an apartment caretaker.  Emma had been strangled sometime during the previous night.

According to appeal documents, the caretaker who found Emma, knew the Accused through their time together at the Dorchester Penitentiary.  As such, it was common for the caretaker to let the Accused and Emma stay in a vacant apartment.

Shortly after 11pm on September 25th, the Accused and Emma were together in an apartment.  As some point during the night, the Accused had left and went to his brother’s house, then hitchhiked to his mother’s home in Malagawatch.  From there the Accused left Nova Scotia by car, heading to Maine.

On December 19, 1991, the Accused was arrested in San Francisco and extradited to Sydney, Nova Scotia.

The Accused was charged and found guilty of second-degree murder with no parole eligibility for 25 years.

In 1993, the Accused appealed the conviction, but the appeal was dismissed.
