Kimberley Patricia Singer, 32, Abercrombie NS

At the age of 32, Kimberley Singer, mother to a ten-year-old daughter, was murdered by her husband.

Kimberley was a long-term resident of Pictou County and employed as a waitress at Papa Lew’s family restaurant. Her employer described Kimberley as “a top-notch waitress.”

On November 19, 1994 police were called to Kimberley’s home in response to a domestic dispute call.

The officers left when the it appeared matters were under control.  The RCMP reported that “the officers didn’t perceive any problems. They spoke to both parties and there appeared to be no threat nor any assaults committed. They felt that everything was in hand.”

Kimberley and her husband were known to police, who had responded to many calls to the couple’s residence in the past several years prior to her death.

Six hours after the first call on the evening of November 19th, neighbors reported hearing shots fired.

RCMP returned to the couple’s home to find the dead bodies of Kimberley and her husband. Kimberley’s daughter was reportedly with relatives when the shootings occurred.

At the time of Kimberley’s death, the Executive Director of Tearmann House indicated that police need to be able to identify less obvious forms of abuse, such as emotional and psychological.  She went on to say, “I think what people are looking for is the woman to be standing there with black eyes and blood.” She went on to say, “Past calls for help should be a red flag for police and other professionals as most women only call police as a last resort.”
