Lorraine Halnuck, 24, Sydney NS

Lorraine Halnuck, age 24, was brutally murdered by her husband on April 30, 1992.

Lorraine and her husband separated after a tumultuous marriage. She stayed in a transition house before moving into her own apartment.

Lorraine was the mother of a two-year old child.

Afraid of her husband who had made several threats that he would kill her, and believing him capable of doing so, Lorraine applied for a peace bond against him.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on April 30, 1992, the police were called to Lorraine’s apartment. Outside her apartment police found blood on the carpet and walls.  The door to her apartment appeared to have been kicked in.

On the floor of her small kitchen, police found Lorraine’s lifeless body, covered in blood, with her husband lying on top of her sobbing and crying. It appeared that she was sexually assaulted. Near Lorraine’s body, police found two bent forks and a broken knife.

Lorraine had a gaping wound on the side of her neck and wounds to her chest, as well as bite and fork marks on both breasts.

After a lengthy trial, with many delays, Lorraine’s husband was found guilty of first-degree murder.  He was sentenced to life in prison without parole for 25 years.

He appealed the verdict.  His appeal was dismissed.
