Wanda Jane Walker, 34, Halifax NS

Wanda had a short, but special life which ended far too early when she was murdered by her former boyfriend on April 6, 1997.

Wanda was a wonderful, gifted single mother to her 6-year-old son, whom she enjoyed walking to school daily.

A talented artist, designer and entrepreneur, Wanda was a graduate of Ryerson Polytechnical Institute with a degree in visual communications.

A supporter of cultural diversity, Wanda was a longtime volunteer with Cuso and a member of the St. Mary’s School Action Team.

Wanda’s ex-boyfriend, a former heavyweight boxer, was serving a sentence for a major robbery conviction.

Wanda’s ex-boyfriend was calling her from prison. Wanda had reported her fears of him to parole officials and police. He also had a substance abuse problem.  Despite all this, Wanda’s ex-boyfriend was granted parole. He had been staying at the Carleton Centre the month prior to Wanda’s murder.

At approximately 3:45 p.m. on April 6th, Wanda staggered to a neighbour’s door and collapsed.  She later died in hospital from a slash wound to her throat.
